The train station in Andoain will undergo a new modernization phase in the coming months, with adaptation works on one of its platforms. The project, announced by Renfe, is part of infrastructure improvements on the C-1 line in Gipuzkoa, aiming to adapt facilities for future mobility needs and increase railway service capacity.
The works are expected to last approximately six months. The intervention will focus on the station's third lateral platform, the only one not renovated in recent actions by Adif.
According to Renfe, the arrival of high-speed rail in the Basque Country will necessitate the reorganization of some services and reinforcement of commuter line transport capacity. This includes the use of double-composition trains, meaning longer trains to carry more passengers and prevent peak-hour saturation.
However, for these trains to operate normally across the entire line, it is essential to adapt the stations beforehand by extending and modifying their platforms to accommodate the new train dimensions. A key part of the work involves extending the third platform by approximately 60 meters, ensuring longer trains can stop safely and comfortably for passengers.
Furthermore, part of the platform will be raised to improve accessibility, easing train access and reducing existing architectural barriers. This measure will particularly benefit individuals with reduced mobility, wheelchair users, the elderly, and families with strollers.
The project also includes the removal of various old elements and the renovation of different station systems and facilities, such as the public address system, lighting, and signage, to enhance both passenger information and the general usability of the railway premises.
Renfe has stated that the work will be carried out in phases to minimize service disruptions and ensure the station's usual operation at all times. The plan includes various construction stages to maintain passenger transit during the intervention.
However, some tasks will need to be performed near the tracks, requiring night-time work to ensure railway safety and reduce interference with train circulation. The railway company emphasizes that these measures will allow the works to be completed while maintaining daily infrastructure use by travelers.
