A member of the Justice Administration visited Donostia this week to address court backlogs in Gipuzkoa and the potential of Artificial Intelligence in judicial processes. During the visit, meetings were held with members of the Justice Administration and the Judiciary, emphasizing that training in Artificial Intelligence is an “opportunity” to tackle the judicial collapse.
Furthermore, the crucial role of immigration lawyers in the regularization process for immigrants has been highlighted. This process, affecting hundreds of thousands of people, is improving thanks to the support of non-governmental organizations and specialized legal professionals, despite initial uncertainty. Although it is a complex process aimed at vulnerable individuals, it is hoped that it will help regularize their situation and grant them access to rights previously denied.
“"The collapse of Justice is widespread. In some territories that are worse off than Gipuzkoa, trials are already being scheduled for 2029."
The collapse in the Justice system is a widespread problem, with more severe situations in other regions. To correct this endemic issue, the new Efficiency in Justice Law aims to establish a new system where judges, magistrates, Justice Administration lawyers, and attorneys collaborate. At the Cendoj in San Sebastián, work is underway on the digitalization of processes and the implementation of Artificial Intelligence to improve response times and reduce backlogs.
The member of the Justice Administration stated that Artificial Intelligence can provide significant assistance in the functioning of Justice, provided it is used as a tool and not for decision-making. Human judgment is essential in trials and the evaluation of evidence. The need to improve the free legal aid service was also stressed, to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their economic capacity, can access the defense of their rights equally.
