An average of 436 aircraft fly over Gipuzkoa's airspace daily, according to July 2025 data, establishing the territory as a crucial point in international air navigation.

The volume of aircraft crossing Gipuzkoa's skies is significant, with an average of 436 flights per day. These figures, from July 2025, indicate that 13,538 flights were recorded over the territory during that month. This highlights Gipuzkoa's strategic position as an important transit point in both national and international air navigation, connecting major airports like Madrid or Málaga with high-traffic European cities such as Paris or Brussels.
According to information provided by ENAIRE, the public company responsible for air navigation management in Spain, 86% of these flights were on international routes. The most frequent connections included Madrid-Paris Orly and Madrid-Amsterdam. Gipuzkoa's airspace is managed from the Madrid air control center, as it falls within the Central-North region, which covers an area of 435,000 square kilometers.
During July 2025, the Madrid control center managed a total of 123,583 flights in this region, marking a 4.6% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. Approximately one-tenth of these flights passed over Gipuzkoa. The main air routes traversing the territory run from south to northwest, passing through areas such as Aizkorri, Ordizia, Tolosa, Peña de Aia, and Bidasoa, and from south to west via Aralar, Legazpi, and Bergara.
The majority of these flights occur above 9,500 feet (2,895 meters), meaning they are not handled by air traffic controllers at Hondarribia airport. The Gipuzkoan control tower manages activity below this altitude, primarily focusing on takeoffs and landings at its own aerodrome or approaches to Biarritz airport.
