Yesterday afternoon and evening, the sky over Gipuzkoa was repeatedly illuminated between six in the evening and ten at night by a spectacular electrical storm. In total, 2,260 lightning strikes were registered from six in the evening, with 2,058 of them concentrated within that four-hour period.
“"The high temperatures reached yesterday, coupled with the convergence of surface winds in the Euskadi area, favored the development of storms at the end of the day. The storms were more remarkable for their electrical activity than for their precipitation."
According to AEMET data, the electrical activity was mainly concentrated between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. After this time, the storm weakened, with only 202 lightning strikes recorded after ten at night. Expanding the focus to Donostia and a 25-kilometer radius, including the maritime area, the figures are even more striking, reaching 3,700 lightning strikes, with 2,400 of them occurring during the peak activity period.
Despite the storm's visual intensity, with the sky frequently lighting up, rainfall was scarce. Hondarribia recorded 10.6 liters per square meter in 24 hours, while the Igeldo station barely reached 2.5 liters. In fact, many of the lightning bolts that fell last night did not strike the ground, remaining within the clouds.
The maximum temperature reached this Tuesday was 29.7 degrees Celsius at Hondarribia airport and 25.2 degrees Celsius in Igeldo. Despite these high values, no records were broken. However, the minimum temperatures recorded this morning were more notable: Mutriku almost experienced a tropical night with 20 degrees Celsius, while Zumaia registered 18 degrees Celsius.
For the coming hours, the forecast indicates stable weather in Gipuzkoa. Thursday will see predominant sunshine and rising temperatures again, although with some low clouds on the Cantabrian coast. Temperatures will remain pleasant, with highs around 20 degrees Celsius on the coast and close to 25 degrees Celsius inland, especially in municipalities like Arrasate. However, the atmosphere could change slightly by the end of the day, with partially cloudy skies during the afternoon and night. Friday and the weekend will bring a clearer shift, with cloudy skies and precipitation, returning instability after several days of almost summer-like weather.
