The construction process for the new residence that the University of the Basque Country (EHU) will build on the Gipuzkoa Campus, in Donostia, is set to commence. The first step will be the demolition of the campus pavilions, which currently partially occupy the area designated for the new residence. This new student service will be located on a plot between the Manuel de Lardizabal promenade and the Berio promenade, situated between the Agud Querol university residence, the Faculty of Law, and the Ignacio Mª Barriola Centre. The demolition of the pavilions is scheduled for August.
The building intended to house the student residence will span 8,000 m² of constructed area and will consist of three volumes, each with 5 and 6 floors. It will accommodate approximately 250 rooms of various types, each with an individual kitchen, and will also include about ten small apartments for postdoctoral researchers.
The main entrance will be located on the Berio promenade. It will lead through an open porch along the northwest edge of the building. The ground floor will house common-use services, including a cafeteria, social spaces, a coworking area, and 300 m² of space reserved for the UPV/EHU. The top floor, in the volume facing the campus, will feature a solarium and a gymnasium.
This new residence aims to address the significant housing demand from undergraduate and postgraduate students, for whom 85% of the room types are reserved. The remaining users will comprise international students, visiting teaching and research staff, and other residents associated with the university community.
