Bergara will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1876 abolition of the fueros and the 50th anniversary of the Mayors' Movement this Sunday, in an institutional event organized by the local council and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.

The event will link two historical milestones that have shaped the institutional organization and the evolution of self-government in the Basque Country. According to the Provincial Council, the ceremony will carry significant symbolic weight, using music, dance, and speech to connect the past, present, and future.
Representatives from over two hundred municipalities across the Basque Country have confirmed their attendance. The 1976 Mayors' Movement, which originated in Bergara, reaffirmed the democratic municipal tradition and the commitment to self-government in a new political context, following the loss of historical rights caused by the 1876 abolition.
The movement from fifty years ago, driven by local elected officials, demanded amnesty and self-government, establishing a foundation for institutional claims during a period of significant political transition.
