The Basque Government has launched a 1.6 billion euro investment program until 2032 to bolster the public healthcare system, with 500 million euros financed by the European Investment Bank.

The Basque Government will allocate 1.6 billion euros to an investment program focused on primary care, hospitals, equipment, and health technology until 2032. The aim is to strengthen the public health system and keep it among the most advanced in Europe. This program will be supported by financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB), which will contribute 500 million euros. The first tranche of the loan, amounting to 250 million euros, was signed today in Bilbao.
The agreement, named Euskadi Health Care Programme in English, includes a total of 74 specific and cross-cutting actions. The largest portion of the investment, 842 million euros, will be dedicated to hospital improvements and construction.
Specifically, 107 million euros will be allocated for a new hospital in Tolosa (Gipuzkoa). The proton therapy center for cancer treatment in Donostia will receive 61.4 million euros. Additionally, new buildings for outpatient consultations will be constructed at the hospitals in Basurtu, Donostia, Galdakao, and Cruces (Barakaldo, Bizkaia).
