The Provincial Councils of Álava, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa, together with the Basque Government, have opened the enrollment period for the Tax Education Program 2026-2027. This educational initiative aims to familiarize students with the functioning of public services, foster citizen co-responsibility, and reinforce values such as solidarity, equity, and commitment to the common good.
The program continues to expand its reach within the Basque educational community. During the 2025-2026 academic year, 277 schools in Euskadi participated, more than double the number from its first edition. Since then, over 70,000 students have engaged with content related to public service funding, the social role of taxes, and the importance of citizen contribution to collective well-being.
The positive reception and feedback from educational centers have solidified this initiative as a benchmark in civic and tax education in Euskadi. Last academic year, the Minister of Finance and Public Funds, Noël d’Anjou, along with the provincial deputies for Finance, Itziar Gonzalo de Zuazo (Álava), Itxaso Berrojalbiz (Bizkaia), and Itziar Agirre (Gipuzkoa), and the Director of Tax Administration, Iñigo Barandica, participated in a session with 4th-year ESO students from the IES Mendebaldea in Vitoria-Gasteiz to explain the program's objectives and content firsthand.
Understanding how public services are financed is crucial in today's context, where strengthening education in democratic values and social participation is increasingly important. The Tax Education Program offers students tools to comprehend the funding of public services and the role of citizens in their maintenance.
Through didactic materials adapted to each educational stage, interactive resources, and participatory methodologies, the program addresses issues such as citizen co-responsibility, social solidarity, the functioning of taxes, and their contribution to building a more cohesive society, fostering reflection and critical thinking.
Among recent additions, the initiative has been extended to 5th and 6th graders of Primary Education and 1st and 2nd year of ESO, joining the traditional groups of 3rd and 4th year ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training. This expansion allows for the introduction of these contents at earlier ages through activities designed for each level. The Basque Government provides pedagogical advice and support, and its Department of Education certifies teacher participation.
The organizing entities emphasize that tax education is a key tool for fostering informed, responsible citizens committed to the sustainability of public services and social cohesion.
Enrollment for the 2026-2027 academic year is now open and can be completed through the form available at Euskadi.eus.
