The Museum of Las Encartaciones in Sopuerta has opened the exhibition 'June 1937. The occupation of Las Encartaciones in black and white'. The exhibition, which can be visited until November 23rd, offers a detailed look at the days when Francoist troops occupied various towns in the region during the Civil War.
The exhibition features 26 large-format photographs capturing the advance of the Nationalist side in the summer of 1937. Many of these images have been unknown to the general public until now and graphically document the devastation and consequences of the conflict in locations such as Zalla, Gueñes, Gordexola, and Balmaseda. There are also snapshots from other areas of the Mining Zone, including Muskiz and Abanto, and the Left Bank, specifically Portugalete, Sestao, and Barakaldo.
The exhibition also includes two video-photo montages showcasing military and social scenes, taken by the Francoist side itself. Among the snapshots are bridges blown up by the Eusko Gudarostea during their retreat, barricades made of stones and carts, bombed sites like the church and square of San Juan in Muskiz, tanks and troops entering Gordexola, or soldiers working as prisoners in the mines of Gallarta.
As part of initiatives to commemorate this phase of the war, the Museum has also organized a heritage trail for June 19th. Titled 'Sopuerta at War: Cabezamonte-Bezi Sector', the activity will involve a walking tour of strategic points in the mountainous area of this municipality, near the Museum of Las Encartaciones.
