The Pipergorri association in Gernika has organized a series of events to honor the 269 Republican war prisoners who lost their lives at the former military hospital. The program begins next Wednesday at the cultural center (6:30 PM) with the presentation of the book 'Las voces de la República' by Joseba Eceolaza.
Spokespersons for the collective stated that in the work, "the author maintains that against the myth of forgetting, many families did not remain silent by choice but out of necessity; they did not speak publicly, but they did not forget what happened."
The events will continue on Friday the 29th with the screening of the film 'La bala' by Carlos Iglesias, shown at the Lizeo antzokia starting at 8:00 PM. Based on real events, the audience will have the opportunity to witness a story that addresses historical memory and family secrets with a tone blending intrigue, drama, and comedy.
On Saturday the 30th, the main event will take place at the Zalla cemetery, where starting at half past eleven in the morning, a tribute will be held in memory of the 269 victims of Francoist repression.
From Pipergorri, they added that "the Asturian, Benito Fernández González, the last prisoner, died on June 3rd, after which the military hospital was closed, hence the tribute to the 269 takes place around that date." This is near the 'Lugar de la Memoria' monolith, created last year in memory of all of them, next to the building that housed the former military hospital.
As some families have indicated they will attend the tribute, "they will give testimony of their memory during the event."
As in previous editions, in addition to the regional offering, a shared reading of the names of the deceased will be held to keep their memory alive, alongside the 'Memorial 269' installation created by José Ibarrola.
Members of the Segundo Olaeta music school band will be responsible for the musical part of the event.
