The Aldatsa soapbox derby team from Zaldibar has decided to disband, concluding five years of activity. Eneko Iraeta, a team member, explained that the group, consisting of about six people, has faced challenges in sustaining their efforts over the last two years due to the members' daily commitments and other involvements.
The association was founded in 2021 with the aim of reviving traditional soapbox derby races, which were a long-standing event during local festivals. After consulting with experienced organizers, Aldatsa held several races annually, including the Zaldibar soapbox derby, which was part of the Euskal Inertzia Cup. Iraeta expressed gratitude to the local community and volunteers for their support.
Regarding the current state of inertia sports, Iraeta acknowledges that there are "ups and downs." While there was a surge in popularity two to three years ago, he notes a subsequent decline, though he points out that the sport is gaining momentum in other areas, such as Busturialdea, with the entry of new generations.
The members of Aldatsa have donated all their equipment to the Basque cultural association Berbaro for use in summer camps and recreational activities.
