Residents will be able to choose between two options: locating the fronton in Palota or Abaromendi. Voting will take place at the Tourist Office and will be open to Orio residents over 18 years of age who are registered in the town. The council will distribute an information leaflet door-to-door and provide more extensive information on the Guk Oriori portal and at the Tourist Office itself. Additionally, an open meeting will be held before the vote to clarify any doubts.
Voting hours are scheduled for June 5 and 6, from 09:30 to 13:30 and from 16:00 to 19:00, and on June 7, from 09:30 to 13:30. To participate, individuals must be registered in Orio before January 1, 2026, and be 18 years old on the day of the vote. An ID card or valid official document will be required for identification. The vote count will take place on June 7 at 20:00 in the town hall plenary chamber, publicly and in the presence of the secretary.
The council has clarified two points: firstly, that the proposals are not final, closed projects but rather preliminary designs developed to analyze the possibilities of each location. Secondly, it has stated that the referendum will not be legally binding, although the municipal parties have made a political commitment to respect the citizens' voice. Based on the results, the political parties will vote on the final location of the new fronton in the relevant committee and plenary session, based on the will of the majority of citizens.
Therefore, the council has urged residents to carefully analyze the information and participate in the referendum, emphasizing that "the location of the new fronton is an important decision linked to the town's future network of facilities, and therefore, it is essential to gather the opinion of the people of Orio."
The council explained that the process starts from three main elements: the condition of the old fronton area, the development of the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), and the action plan to meet the town's facility needs. The PGOU's development has opened up a new possibility of locating the fronton in the Palota area. Preliminary designs for both locations have been developed in collaboration with the architecture firm XS arkitektura.
