Smart battery management is crucial for the electrification of transport and the expansion of energy storage systems. In this context, OBS (Orain Battery Solutions) has emerged, a spin-off promoted by Maier and Cidetec, specializing in the development of Battery Management Systems (BMS).
The company combines Maier's industrial capabilities with Cidetec's experience in energy storage technologies. According to Jon Duo, senior hardware engineer at OBS, this fusion of knowledge and industrial expertise will enable the development of high-value-added solutions.
OBS develops the hardware and software for BMS, considered the "electronic brain" of batteries. These systems monitor key parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature, ensuring battery safety, performance, and lifespan.
Duo highlights that OBS's main strength lies in combining deep knowledge of battery technology with industrialization capacity. While Cidetec offers advanced expertise in battery chemistry and operation, Maier facilitates the scalability and adaptation of these developments into industrial solutions.
OBS's systems are integrated into high-demand applications, including commercial mobility (buses and trucks), public works, agricultural, and mining machinery, as well as the naval and railway sectors. They also provide solutions for energy storage in industrial environments and at grid scale.
A significant recent milestone for OBS has been achieving the ISO 26262 functional safety certification, a benchmark standard in the automotive industry. This achievement, the result of years of work and substantial investment, positions the company among a select group of European firms with this recognition in BMS systems.
In a highly competitive and technologically transforming market, OBS identifies key challenges such as adapting to new battery chemistries, integrating emerging technologies, enhancing digitalization through calculation and predictive maintenance algorithms, and strengthening cybersecurity.
The company emphasizes the importance of maintaining global competitiveness and aims to strengthen strategic alliances to facilitate international expansion, with the goal of becoming a European leader in advanced battery management technologies.
