EAE Hotel Entries and Overnight Stays Increased by 4.6% and 4.4% in May

Foreign visits saw a significant rise, while average stay and profitability remained stable.

Hotel establishments in the Basque Autonomous Community (EAE) experienced a notable rise in the number of entries and overnight stays during May, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Hotel establishments in the Basque Autonomous Community (EAE) recorded 398,351 entries and 773,816 overnight stays in May. These figures represent an increase of 4.6% and 4.4% respectively, compared to the same month last year. Foreign visits were predominant, accounting for 55.9% of entries and 58.2% of overnight stays, according to the Basque statistics agency Eustat.
Analyzing by territory, Álava registered 50,772 entries and 102,845 overnight stays, an increase of 8.5% and 2.8% compared to May of the previous year. In Bizkaia, entries rose by 3.2% and overnight stays by 1.9%, reaching 187,408 and 345,398 respectively. Meanwhile, in Gipuzkoa, 160,221 entries and 325,573 overnight stays were recorded, with an increase of 4.9% and 7.7%.
Regarding the capitals, the volume of entries grew by 7.9% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1.3% in San Sebastián, and 0.6% in Bilbao. For overnight stays, there was a 0.4% increase in Bilbao, 0.6% in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and 7.1% in San Sebastián.
The average length of stay has remained similar to last year's data, with an average stay in May of 1.94 days in EAE's hotel establishments, slightly lower than the 1.95 days recorded the previous year.
In terms of occupancy level, it stood at 64.1% by available places and 78.1% by occupied rooms. Compared to May 2025, occupancy by places decreased by 0.1 percentage points, while occupancy by rooms increased by 0.2 percentage points.
Profitability has also seen an increase. The average daily rate (ADR) stood at 143.0 euros in the entire EAE, representing a 10.4% rise compared to May of the previous year. By territory, the ADR was 156.2 euros in Gipuzkoa, 141.6 euros in Bizkaia, and 107.8 euros in Álava. Among the capitals, the ADR in San Sebastián was 197.7 euros, in Bilbao 163.8 euros, and in Vitoria-Gasteiz 93.4 euros. Average revenue per available room (RevPar) reached 111.6 euros in May, 10.7% higher than the same month last year.
Furthermore, from January to May, entries in EAE's hotel establishments increased by 2.1% and overnight stays by 2.2% compared to the same accumulated period in 2025. The average stay was 1.92 days, similar to that recorded in the same period of the previous year.
The occupancy level for the first five months of the year was 50.8% by available places and 62.2% by occupied rooms, percentages that are 0.9 and 0.6 percentage points lower, respectively, than those of the same accumulated period in 2025.
