Created by the Eskuahaldunak association and students from the Fray Juan de Zumarraga institute, the wooden figure was previously located in Madalenoste square. Due to environmental conditions and the materials used, the sculpture has deteriorated, prompting local authorities to prioritize public safety.
Originally conceived as an ephemeral work, its stay was extended until early 2025. The mayor of Durango stated that despite previous agreements, the current condition of the sculpture poses a risk to public safety, necessitating its removal.
“"The City Council has tried to be flexible at all times, but the priority will always be the safety of the citizens. Therefore, the removal of the work has been ordered."
The move to the institute's grounds will allow thousands of students and residents to continue learning about the history of this figure. The local government will continue to work with the sculptors' association to ensure a safe and proper relocation process.
