The Iurreta Police Center, located in Bizkaia, is one of the most significant infrastructures of the Ertzaintza. Far more than a common citizen security police station, this complex functions as the main base for training, operations, and coordination for the specialized and elite units of the Basque Police.
It houses the three disciplines integrated within the Ertzaintza's Central Command for Tactical Support: the Mobile Brigade (riot control), the Surveillance and Rescue Unit (UVR) (responsible for mountain, river, and coastal rescue operations, as well as aerial and maritime surveillance), and the Explosives Disposal Unit (UDE) (specialists in disabling explosive devices).
Given its tactical nature, the center boasts highly specialized technical facilities, including a heliport and hangars to accommodate the Ertzaintza's helicopter fleet (featuring modern Airbus H135 models for rescue and surveillance). It also provides training and simulation areas for the continuous development of tactical intervention, rescue, and public order units.
This center is not solely for internal use; it also serves as a crucial hub for collaboration and training among various security forces. It frequently hosts training encounters, tests of new technical materials, and tactical simulations involving invited forces, such as the five agents from the Navarre Foral Police who were en route to a training course to test materials, prior to the fatal accident on the AP-8 highway near Elgoibar.
