The Gurutze Berri neighborhood in Idiazabal has entered a new era, inaugurated yesterday afternoon with a renovated appearance and a more modern touch. The works have spanned two years and had a budget of 2.2 million euros.
Coinciding with the neighborhood's 60th anniversary, the Idiazabal City Council has carried out renovation and reurbanization works. Mayor Iñaki Alberdi explained that it has been one of the most significant projects for the council in recent years. All infrastructure has been renewed with the aim of revitalizing the neighborhood and adapting it to current standards.
“"All infrastructure has been renewed, and with these works we have aimed to revitalize the neighborhood and adapt it to current standards."
The reurbanization works began in September 2023. The neighborhood's infrastructure, such as piping and cabling, has been renewed, all lighting has been adapted to an LED system, and the asphalt of streets and sidewalks has also been redone. Accessibility has been improved, and priority has been given to pedestrians throughout the area. Additionally, several new green spaces and a new children's playground with a roof have been created.
The total cost of these works has been 2.2 million euros. A significant portion of this sum has been financed through grants from various entities: 830,800 euros have been received from Erein, and the entity Gipuzkoako Urak has contributed another 171,000 euros. The remainder, 1,220,000 euros, has been covered by the council, with 520,000 euros from its own funds and 700,000 through a loan.
The Gurutze Berri neighborhood was created through popular initiative in the 1960s, specifically between 1964 and 1965. During a period of intense industrialization, and seeing the housing need in the town, several citizens joined together and formed a cooperative. Initially, there were 22 members, and eventually 36 joined, constructing six buildings.
