The Durango City Council aims to replace a public restroom that was located for many years in the Madalena neighborhood, next to the bus stop. This facility was dismantled in 2024 during improvement works in the area's square. Now, the Council proposes to relocate it next to the long pedestrian walkway in Landako, a decision that has sparked debate among residents.
According to municipal sources, the new location offers a dual benefit: it restores the restroom near the bus stop and urbanizes an area that was in a provisional state. Additionally, the incorporation of an accessible ramp significantly improves pedestrian safety. This proposal, with a cost of 162,000 euros, provides better visibility and a greater distance from homes, addressing one of the main demands of the Madalena neighborhood.
“"Wouldn't it be better to build it in the large square between Landako Gunea and Elkartegi? There's plenty of space and no houses around; rows of public restrooms are placed in that area during patron saint festivals."
Last Monday, an open assembly was held for residents of the Murueta Torre neighborhood to gather opinions and suggestions. The mayor and representatives from other political parties attended the meeting. During the gathering, several citizens voiced their concerns and differing views. While some supported the new location due to its proximity to the bus stop and improved accessibility, others expressed worries about potential bad odors and inconvenience for nearby residents.
“"You are transferring a problem to us and selling it as creating a landscaped area. Who is going to sit on a bench next to a bathroom?"
The municipal government has announced that it will soon convene a meeting with the senior citizens' association Bizidun, Durango Lagunkoia, and feminist women's groups to jointly analyze the proposals. Furthermore, the extension of the bidegorri (bike path) in Muruetatorre was also discussed at the meeting, and the City Council stated that it would work on this proposal and present it at the next meeting. Concerns about the high presence of bicycles and electric scooters on sidewalks were also addressed, and the City Council announced that it would offer talks in educational centers to inform about the correct use of helmets.
