The initiative was launched in 2018 with the goal of strengthening Basque-language production and the work of emerging creators. Gotzon Gomez, president of Gerediaga, encouraged creators to participate, stating, "We want to give a boost to those just starting in the world of creation." Gomez expressed gratitude for the Durango City Council's support.
Paule Sanchez, Durango's Councilor for Basque Language and Culture, emphasized that "Durango is the heart of Basque culture." She added, "We offer new creators the opportunity to present their ideas, gain visibility, and receive support." Sanchez highlighted, "Our goal is not only to strengthen creation in Basque but also to show the world the power of our living language and culture."
“"We have had a fruitful and beautiful journey with the Creation Grant over the years, and we want to continue accompanying new creators."
Gomez recalled that in 2025, the jury selected the comic book Gizaberetxoak. Joxe Azurmendiren joanak eta etorriak, presented by Durango residents Usue Egia and Ainoa Olaso along with Mikel Urdangarin. This year's outcome will be presented at the Durangoko Azoka itself.
Participation is open to individuals and groups, provided the work is original and in Basque. Creators have until September 21st to submit their proposals to gerediaga@durangokoazoka.eus. The full guidelines are available on www.durangokoazoka.eus. The selected project will receive 15,000 euros for development, and the resulting work will be publicly presented at the 2027 Durangoko Azoka. Those who have already published two works or completed more than five collaborations will be excluded from the call.
