The Durango City Council will commence renovation works on the historic Kapitanena farmhouse by the end of the year, with an investment of nearly one million euros, to convert it into a public space for social and cultural activities in the San Fausto neighborhood.

The Durango City Council announced yesterday that the comprehensive renovation works of the historic Kapitanena farmhouse, built in 1885, will begin by the end of this year with an investment of 960,000 euros. The aim is to transform it into a public space or 'auzogune' for social and cultural activities for the residents of the San Fausto neighborhood.
The intervention will preserve the essence of the building but will include an extension on the ground floor to connect the property with the residential area. This action responds to a long-standing neighborhood demand for adequate infrastructure in the area, a deficiency that has been temporarily compensated by the cession of a local space.

"This project, which has been developed in collaboration with the neighborhood association, will contribute to improving access to municipal services and activities."

The building, over a century old and last renovated in 1985, will house various rooms such as a meeting room, a reading or study area, a storage room, a boiler room, and restrooms. An extension to the east of the building is also planned, with a new covered structure, adding a multi-purpose space of 88 square meters and an annex of 55. This space has been identified by residents and local agents as a reference point for fostering civic, cultural, and community gathering activities.
Furthermore, the Durango City Council plenary session approved a credit modification last Wednesday for several important projects. Among these, 174,320 euros will be invested in installing a self-cleaning toilet and redeveloping the Muruetatorre intersection to improve safety and accessibility. Additionally, 15,000 euros will be allocated for drafting the redevelopment project for Saibi street, focusing on creating an intergenerational and meeting space that will house the future senior citizens' center. A sculpture reflecting Durango's identity and becoming a distinctive element of the city will also be installed, with an investment of 41,500 euros. Finally, 18,000 euros will be invested in an information campaign to raise public awareness about the importance of keeping streets clean and facilitating proper waste management.

"With this investment, we are not only renovating our infrastructures but also responding to people's needs, creating more accessible, safer spaces where everyone can feel included. Durango continues to take firm steps forward, ensuring that our services continue to improve and are closer to what our residents need day by day."
