The works, which began three weeks ago, are currently focused on the Matxinestarta area. Crews are demolishing old walls and preparing the sub-base for the future sidewalk and bike lane. The project covers a 500-meter stretch between Olleria and Ermodo.
The project has a budget of 878,731 euros and is part of an agreement signed with Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) in April 2024. This agreement allowed the municipality to incorporate over 9,300 square meters of land freed up after the railway was moved underground.
Key improvements include the restoration of the historic metal bridge over the Mañaria river, which will be adapted for pedestrian and cycling use as a heritage site. The project also includes the creation of new green spaces, lighting upgrades, and the removal of architectural barriers throughout the route.
