The initial steps of this strategic project focus on renovating and expanding the sports center's entrance area. The aim is to enhance the space's usability and accessibility, increase the building's energy efficiency, and modernize its image.
The works include the complete refurbishment of the main lobby and its connecting corridors, the adaptation of restrooms with new safety and accessibility criteria, the relocation of technical and administrative areas, and the creation of a new wifi zone and a rest area.
Derio's mayor, Esther Apraiz, highlighted the project's significance, describing it as one of the most important strategic initiatives launched in the municipality. "We will take the first step to transform our sports center and offer citizens more modern, accessible, functional facilities adapted to current and future needs," she stated.
The council aims to maintain quality sports infrastructure and develop the sports center in line with the municipality's growth. This transformation will be carried out in three phases to minimize the impact on the facility's daily operations.
The second phase will focus on the ground floor area, creating new changing rooms for school groups, improving subscriber changing rooms, expanding the weight training and TRX rooms, and fitting out new multipurpose and group activity rooms. The third phase will be dedicated to the aquatic area, including the expansion and improvement of changing rooms and the creation of a new space for school groups.
Derio has invested over 5 million euros in sports infrastructure between 2019 and 2025, including projects at the summer pools, the football field, and various other sports areas within the municipality.
