Gerediaga Elkartea, an association dedicated to promoting the culture and history of the Duranguesado region, has conducted extensive research in collaboration with the Abadiño City Council. This effort has led to the publication of a book titled Ecos de la guerra de 1936 en Abadiño. Testimonios locales, which stands as the first in-depth study of the Spanish Civil War's impact on the municipality.
Authored by Jesús Mari Arruabarrena, the book is the outcome of a collective process involving researchers, various associations, and local residents. Utilizing historical documents and statements from those directly affected, the project aims to retrieve stories that had previously remained in the private sphere. The narrative begins by explaining the context leading up to the conflict and the sociopolitical situation of the town, then proceeds to cover various wartime episodes. It documents bombings, imprisonments, and purges, blending archival data with first-person accounts.
In the book's final section, historian Jimi Jiménez has compiled lists of Abadiño residents connected to the war. These individuals are categorized as militiamen, those forced into labor battalions, those tried, refugees and evacuees, those killed and wounded in bombings, executed individuals, sympathizers and soldiers of the Nationalist side, mobilized residents, and industrial workers, among others. Furthermore, a QR code provides access to their brief biographies. The information gathering relied on extensive documentary work and interviews. In total, nearly 40 people were interviewed, with twenty of them recorded on video.
The project, developed over the past two years, will be presented on April 23rd at the Errota cultural center, at 6:30 PM. From that day forward, the recorded narratives will be available for viewing on the website garaia.gerediaga.eus. The book will also be available for purchase on the presentation day and subsequently at various sales points and online.
