The Lezo City Council and i-DE Smart Grids, a distributor of the Iberdrola Group, have signed an agreement to remove the Marrukene electrical substation and replace it with a new, smaller installation.

This agreement will allow for the modernization of the electrical infrastructure supplying the municipality through digitized systems, aimed at improving supply quality and preparing the grid for future electrification processes. Furthermore, the agreement unblocks the planned urban development in the Marrukene area, considered strategic for the municipality and key for residential growth in the coming years.
The details of the agreement were announced this week during a joint press conference attended by the Mayor of Lezo, Mikel Arruti Salaberria, and the head of distribution for Eastern Gipuzkoa at i-DE, Arantxa García de la Piedad. The mayor emphasized that the future urban planning of Marrukene has been a priority for the municipal government since the start of the legislature and positively valued the collaboration with Iberdrola in recent months.
The current General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU) anticipates the construction of approximately 170 homes in this area. However, a major obstacle to developing the project was the high economic cost of relocating the existing electrical substation, an undertaking valued at around five million euros, which, as explained, was not the most technically suitable solution from an electrical standpoint. Thanks to the agreement reached, the City Council will avoid this extraordinary cost, as the new infrastructure will be entirely financed by the electric company.
The project now includes the installation of a new distribution center and the construction of underground electrical lines connecting the new infrastructure to the ST Oiartzun substation. Iberdrola will invest 2.5 million euros in the works, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. i-DE highlighted the company's role as a driver of the energy transition and valued the institutional collaboration with the Lezo City Council to advance an initiative they consider crucial for the municipality's development.
Both parties stressed that the renovation of the electrical grid will enable the infrastructure to adapt to new energy needs arising from increased electricity consumption, sustainable mobility, and the implementation of renewable energies. The City Council and the company agreed that such agreements are fundamental for promoting strategic projects and ensuring urban development compatible with the improvement of public services and citizens' quality of life.
