The Lasarte-Oria City Council and the Sahararekin Elkartasuna association have welcomed five Sahrawi children this summer as part of the 'Oporrak Bakean' pilot project, offering them a respite from the conflict.

The initiative is supported by local organizations including Sahararekin Elkartasuna Lasarte-Oria and Tolosaldea Saharearekin. Four of the children are staying in a municipal apartment, while the fifth is hosted by a local family.
The project includes a 10,000-euro contribution to cover travel, accommodation, and support services. The children have access to sports facilities and municipal summer camps, with daily supervision provided by monitors.
Away from the extreme temperatures of the Tinduf desert, the children receive proper nutrition and comprehensive medical check-ups. Organizers emphasize that this experience allows them to explore new environments, including the sea, mountains, and local rivers.
