The municipalities of Andoain, Astigarraga, Hernani, Lasarte-Oria, Urnieta, and Usurbil organize this initiative in collaboration with local driving schools. Over the past sixteen years, more than 1,300 citizens have participated, with some receiving prizes through a lottery.
Last year, 69 citizens successfully completed the theoretical part of their driving test in Basque: seven in Andoain, eight in Astigarraga, 28 in Hernani, six in Urnieta, and twenty in Usurbil. This year marked the final joint lottery draw, as declining participation in recent years has led most municipalities to prepare for direct financial aid, each in their own way. The Municipality of Lasarte-Oria has pioneered this new system.
This year marked the final joint lottery draw.
In this year's event, eight prizes of 400 euros each were raffled. The winners were: Maren Jauregi Ugartemendia and Nahia Gorostidi Lopez (Andoain); Enaitz Isasti Zabaleta (Astigarraga); Eki Sanchez Balerdi, Endika Rekondo Murua, and Ane Livi Santacruz Elosegi (Hernani); Hegoi Lizaso Lopez (Urnieta); and Saray Hernandez Etayo (Usurbil). The program organizers also expressed gratitude to the driving schools involved: Bengoetxea and Vallina CAP (Andoain), Hernani, Lagunak, and Otamendi (Hernani), and Solozabal (Urnieta and Usurbil).
The initiative was launched in 2010 and has since involved over 1,300 participants across the six municipalities. It is coordinated by the Basque Driving Schools Federation with support from the Basque Government. In 2024, a new website (gidabaimenaeuskaraz.eus) was launched along with updated materials, featuring a map of over 160 driving schools in the Basque Autonomous Community.
Furthermore, among those who register on this website, two electric mopeds will be raffled on December 3rd, International Euskera Day. To enter the draw, participants must provide proof of having taken the theoretical driving test in Basque. Those who have not yet taken the exam will have three months after the draw to submit their certificate.
