The mayoress herself will testify today to «verify the content» of the information sent by the City Council to the Judicial Police and the Ertzaintza regarding alleged aggressions by a teacher at the Xenpelar Bertso Eskola, and to help «identify potential victims». So far, no formal complaint has been filed with the Ertzaintza.
The council indicates that the Prosecutor's Office for Minors is responsible for «guaranteeing the adequate protection of minors» who allegedly suffered «inappropriate behavior, including harassment and in some cases aggression» from a teacher, despite him supposedly being removed from the school since 2018.
In a statement sent on Thursday, the City Council defends that it «has acted at all times according to the wishes of the victims», and that since it first became aware of the alleged facts in early May, it «has acted with transparency and collaboration with the Ertzaintza and the Judicial Police».
Otaegi asserts that her «will is to continue collaborating with the different institutions of the Prosecutor's Office, the Ertzaintza, and the Equality bodies of the Provincial Council» to clarify the case, which became public last Thursday.
After analyzing the documentation, the Prosecutor's Office will decide whether to open proceedings against the accused, who is an adult and has previous complaints for gender-based violence. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office for Minors will act to protect the victims, whose number is unknown.
The alleged aggressions became public last Thursday, when feminist movements from Errenteria and Oiartzun and Bertsozale Elkartea denounced «aggressions and sexist attitudes» allegedly committed by the teacher against minors on a continuous basis. The City Council echoed these concerns, denouncing the «harassment and, in some cases, aggressions» towards students of this municipal service and indicated that it had become aware of the accused's history at that moment, «when several psychological and sexual abuses have been reported».
The first complaint against him for gender-based violence was filed with Bertsozale Elkartea in 2018. At that time, the association internally agreed to his removal from bertsolaritza activities. According to consulted sources, he later returned to Xenpelar and in 2024, facing new complaints, he was again removed as a teacher, although during this period he continued «as an active member» and carried out activities with students, apparently without the knowledge of Bertsozale Elkartea or the council. Now, two years later, with new complaints, these acts committed «continuously over time» have reached the Justice system.
