Students in Errenteria have once again demonstrated their commitment to the river. Nearly 200 young people from the municipality took part in a waste collection activity in the Fanderia river area, organized within the Agenda Escolar 2030 program.
One of the main objectives of this initiative was to offer a "broad perspective" on the riverine zone. The Oiartzun River is not just a channel for water; it is a living ecosystem comprising vegetation, fauna, water quality, riverbank structures, and citizen habits.
Through guided tours, students reflected on the importance of riparian vegetation, the damage caused by waste, the influence of river formations on biodiversity, and the commitments citizens can make in their daily lives. These sessions took place at the end of May with primary school students from Bizarain, Cristobal Gamon, Egiluze, and Telleri-Alde, as well as secondary school students from Bizarain, Egiluze, Koldo Mitxelena, and Telleri-Alde.
After collecting the waste, the students identified and classified it, and shared reflections on aspects that can be improved in these spaces, such as prevention, infrastructure (bins, signs), cleaning monitoring, and environmental education. The areas intervened in were the river itself, where secondary students ventured down, and the Park of Peace, where the younger children participated. These two locations provided an opportunity to learn firsthand about the relationship between the river and the municipality's green spaces.
This action, carried out by educational centers for several years, has witnessed the transformation of the area over time. In January, the work undertaken by the Basque Water Agency-URA and the City Council on the left bank of the river near Fanderia concluded. These efforts have equipped the area with extended and naturalized banks, consolidated with lush native riparian vegetation, and have created a new pond, ideal for amphibians and aquatic ecosystems.
