The municipality of Astigarraga will soon have its own public secondary school, thanks to an investment of 22.8 million euros approved by the Basque Government Council. Following a proposal from the Department of Education, the contract for the development of the new center has been authorized, with an estimated 24-month construction period.
This initiative marks "a new step" in meeting the "current and future educational needs" of the Gipuzkoa town. Until now, students finishing primary education primarily continued their studies at the Martutene institute or in nearby municipalities, a situation families have long been demanding.
The significant demographic growth experienced by Astigarraga in recent years has increased the municipality's educational needs. Data indicates that 24% of residents are under 19 years old, a percentage that doubles the proportion of those over 65 (12%).
The facilities for the future center will be built on a plot of land in the Mendiaundi-Anibar area, ceded by the City Council for this purpose. The terrain presents particular technical challenges due to its slope and ground characteristics, requiring specific planning for earthworks, foundations, and site adaptation.
The new institute will be designed to accommodate four full lines of Compulsory Secondary Education, comprising 16 ESO units, along with specific classrooms, a gymnasium, a dining hall, and other necessary facilities. The project also allows for future expansion with six Baccalaureate classrooms and new specialized spaces.
