Motorsport roared back into Gipuzkoa this Saturday, after a fifteen-year break, with the celebration of the first edition of the Erniope Rallysprint. This event, organized by Ardatz Motorsport kluba, generated great anticipation among fans and was held between the municipalities of Azpeitia, Errezil, and Bidania-Goiatz.
The 13.7-kilometer route started in front of the Lapatx landfill and finished in Bidania-Goiatz. Participants completed four stages in total: two in the morning uphill and two in the afternoon downhill. A total of 46 drivers and 46 co-drivers competed, with approximately half of them from the local region, confirming the deep roots of motorsport in the area.
The final victory went to the pair of Aitzol Apalantza and Aritz Uzkudun, driving a Hyundai i20 N Rally2. They managed to win after an intense battle with Iker Zinkunegi and Denis Astigarraga, who competed with a BMW M3 E36 and finished in second place just 5.9 seconds behind the winners due to an error that resulted in a penalty from the judges.
Third place was secured by Alberto Marcos and Garazi Beitia, with a BMW M3 Alpina, finishing 1 minute and 9 seconds behind the first-place team. One of the day's highlights occurred on the downhill section, where Aitzol Apalantza and Aritz Uzkudun broke the stage record, stopping the clock at exactly 7 minutes, thus improving the previous mark set in 2007 by Gorka Apalantza, Aitzol's brother, which was 7 minutes and 7 seconds.
