Abixaran took over the organization of the Torreauzo cross in 2016, aiming to move away from the purely competitive aspect of sport and foster a more inclusive and enjoyable activity. This year, on June 28th, they will celebrate a decade with this philosophy (9 editions, accounting for the pandemic's pause), with a special focus on boosting female participation, and the numbers support their success: while only 16 women participated in 2015, last year saw 90 (64 of them from Oñati).
Their objective is clear: to continue highlighting the inclusive nature of sport and to demonstrate that mental barriers are often harder to overcome than physical ones. Since Abixaran took the reins, the event has maintained its popular spirit and opened doors to a broader and more diverse audience, first by encouraging female registration, then group participation (in teams of at least three), and in recent editions, by promoting barrier-free sports.
In line with this, on June 28th, the first participants to start (at 10:00 AM) will be those covering the course by hand bike, sports wheelchair, or scooter. At 10:30 AM, the start for other participants will take place, with a maximum capacity of 300 people and a 7.5-kilometer route (from Etxe Aundi to Olate and back).
“"The last two years the bibs have sold out, so we encourage early registration."
Bibs have sold out in the last two editions (ten days before the race last year), so Abixaran encourages participants to register early on the website www.herrikrosa.eus. The cost is 12 euros until June 26th at 10:00 PM; thereafter, if bibs remain, the price will increase to 18 euros until 9:00 AM on race day.
All participants will receive a t-shirt, a bag, and the traditional and appreciated 'hamaiketako' (mid-morning snack). Additionally, there will be prize draws thanks to the collaboration of Oñati's local businesses and the popular cross's sponsors. The countdown to the Torreauzo has begun.
