Amendments to the Basque Public Employment Law have progressed in the Basque Parliament following the abstention of EH Bildu. These proposals are set for a final push during the plenary session on June 25th, with the goal of supporting the language revitalization process.
The role of public administration as a driver for normalization has been highlighted, particularly as a 'breathing space' in areas where the language is less common. While significant progress has been made over the last 30 years, the current challenge is to align institutional leadership with social efforts.
“"Public administration has an important function in the process of revitalizing the Basque language. It acts as a breathing space in Spanish-speaking areas, as it provides the opportunity to use Basque."
The focus is now on increasing the use of the language in daily life, aiming to gain 300,000 new speakers and surpass the 20% usage threshold by 2036. The recent Euskaltzaleon Martxa in Iruñea demonstrated the strength of the social movement and the commitment of younger generations to the future of the language.
