Having achieved their main season objective, promotion to División de Honor B, Gaztedi Neskak was unable to conclude the season on a high note. The Vitoria-Gasteiz team lost to Geurea in Zarautz with a score of 7-10 in the final moments of the Liga Vasca final, after having led on the scoreboard until almost the very last play.
Gaztedi entered the match as favorites, following a spectacular league season where they remained undefeated and secured a hard-earned and deserved promotion. Furthermore, the Alava team had already defeated Geurea—a team composed of players from Zornotza, Elorrio, and Arrasate—in their two previous league encounters.
In the first match, played in Arrasate, Gaztedi won 10-17 in a closely contested game. In the return fixture, however, the Vitoria-Gasteiz team dominated clearly, finishing the match with a resounding 31-0 victory.
The game looked promising for the team coached by Miguel Beltrán de Otalora in the 24th minute when they scored the first try of the match. Additionally, the Vitoria-Gasteiz team capitalized on the opportunity to add the extra two points through the conversion, setting the score at 7-0.
However, it soon became apparent that the match would not be as straightforward or as one-sided as their last league encounter. Geurea reacted and persistently sought an equalizer, but time and again they were met by the solid defense of the Alava team.
Thus, Gaztedi went into halftime with a 7-0 lead, which, albeit provisionally, secured them the Liga Vasca title. It seemed like the perfect culmination to a great season, but Geurea had not yet had their final say.
Geurea's effort finally paid off in the 46th minute, shortly after the second half began. The Biscay-Gipuzkoa team scored a try, narrowing the score to 7-5. However, they failed to convert the subsequent kick at goal, leaving Gaztedi with a slim advantage.
From that point on, the Alava defense once again held the team for a significant portion of the game, showcasing the solidity that had characterized them throughout the season. Nevertheless, this time they could not maintain their lead until the end.
Beyond the regulation 80 minutes, in added time due to stoppages, Geurea found the decisive try. It occurred in the 86th minute, practically in the last action of the match, when they took the lead for the first time in the entire game. A late blow, but sufficient to secure the victory and claim the Liga Vasca title.
Gaztedi missed out on the perfect ending, but not without reasons to be proud. The defeat does not tarnish an outstanding season, marked by consistency, solidity, and a promotion that confirms the excellent current standing of the Vitoria-Gasteiz team.
