Arrasate's Etxezarreta Park will reopen on May 31st, featuring its restored historic botanical garden. Located on a bend of the Deba River, bordering Arrasate, Bergara, and Oñati, this 83-hectare rustic estate holds significant natural and landscape value. The City Council and Txatxilipurdi Elkartea have collaborated on its restoration.
Of the estate's 83 hectares, 63 were covered by old pine forests, with the remaining 20 preserving native vegetation. The area also hosts one of the last stretches of healthy riverside vegetation along the Deba River and remnants of a 19th-century historical garden, boasting ancient trees like sequoias, cedars, and yews.
Works initiated by the City Council in March have revitalized the environment's ecological, botanical, and landscape value. Key improvements include the creation of 416 meters of new natural paths, the refurbishment of meadows, vegetation rearrangement, and the planting of approximately 80 new specimens, including conifers, Japanese maples, magnolias, cherry trees, and palm trees. Additionally, resting furniture, primarily wooden benches, has been installed, with signage and informative panels planned.
The project aims to "return a unique space to the public that combines nature, heritage, and history, now transformed into a site for sustainable, quality leisure." The investment for the project, carried out by Txukun Lorazantza S.L, amounts to 114,400 euros.
The inauguration day, May 31st, will kick off at 10:00 AM with a family walk starting from Arruena (Musakola neighborhood). This will be followed by a guided tour and children's games, facilitated by monitors from Txatxilipurdi. A combo from Arrasate Musikal will also perform.
