After an unusually hot May and extreme temperatures in recent days, thermometers are set to plummet by more than ten degrees starting this Friday. According to data from the Ministry of Health's MoMo system, the heatwave has caused at least 18 deaths in the Basque Country, and Osakidetza treated six people in Gipuzkoa yesterday for heatstroke.
Before this relief arrived, Thursday marked a final day of intense heat. The San Prudentzio station in Bergara recorded the highest temperature in the province at 36.4º, closely followed by Oñati (35º), the Amundarain station (34.9º), and Alegia (34.7º). Towns such as Arrasate (34.6º), Zizurkil (34.1º), and Ordizia (33.4º) also registered unusual values for this time of year.
On the coast, figures were more moderate: Zarautz reached 27.8º and the Santa Clara station in Donostia recorded 26.2º. Meanwhile, the lowest temperatures last night were registered in Berastegi (11.5º), Oñati (13.8º), Arrasate (14.8º), Andoain (15.2º), and Ordizia (15.4º).
From today onwards, the situation will change radically. Temperatures in the capital will drop by about ten degrees compared to yesterday, with a forecast high of 23º and a low of 17º. "A much more seasonable temperature for this time of year," note sources from Aemet. "The atmosphere, very dry after days of intense heat, will gradually become more humid, and cloud cover will increase throughout the day," they add.
The weekend will confirm the return to normality. Saturday and Sunday will see maximum temperatures around 22-23 degrees and minimums of 16-17º on the coast, with variable cloudiness and westerly winds. Inland, there will be less cloud cover. Furthermore, Sunday is expected to be the clearest day, with good chances of sunshine both along the coast and, especially, in inland areas.
Uncertainty will arrive next week. Monday will maintain an anticyclonic situation with few clouds and pleasant temperatures, although late in the afternoon, developing thunderstorms could form in the mountainous inland areas. Tuesday, however, could see a small front bringing the first rainfall in many days, a rain that, after a week of such high temperatures, would be even welcome.
