Today, almost anything can be found and purchased online. Platforms like Wallapop offer a wide range of items, from everyday objects to much more unusual ones. Among the most curious listings is that of the Arnope recreational society in Mutriku, a building located next to the Kalbario high point, near the Camino de Santiago and in the shadow of Mount Arno.
The advertisement specifies that it is a “cultural space with a pelota court for events or sports activities,” described as “like new,” with an initial asking price of just one euro. The owners of this society, which offers privileged views of the Cantabrian Sea and whose main feature is an impressive seven-frame indoor pelota court, have decided to sell it. If no buyers emerge, they are also considering the option of admitting new members.
“"We hardly use it, and facilities like these, if not utilized, eventually deteriorate."
The history of the Arnope society and its pelota court, built in 1972, has a unique origin. It began with a group of friends from Elgoibar who would gather on weekends to play pelota. However, public courts were often occupied, leading to the idea of building their own. The proposal was well-received, and in 1972, the society was inaugurated, operating at full capacity for many years. Over time, as the members aged, the use of the facilities declined.
Finally, six years ago, a few remaining members acquired the outstanding shares and undertook a significant renovation that has left the facilities in perfect condition. The Arnope society now features eight showers, three bathrooms (one adapted), two dining rooms with capacity for 80 people, an industrial kitchen, and a modern heating system.
