The works have been awarded to the company Aguas y Jardines S.L. for an amount of 6,290,624 euros with an execution period of five months. The project is co-financed by Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) and the Eibar City Council. ETS is responsible for the tender, contracting, execution, direction, and financing, while the municipal government has undertaken the drafting and approval of the project.
The platform, to be constructed over the railway line, will exceed 1,000 meters in length with an average width of 10 meters. Access will be provided through several stair sections and three elevators along the promenade, which opened to the public on April 1st.
The project has been designed in line with current climate change adaptation and climate emergency measures, providing citizens with a new quality green urban space and an opportunity to increase biodiversity and the city's green infrastructure.
The initiative includes landscaping with grasses, perennials, and shrubs, considering the structural limitations of the covering. The chosen shrubs will be two meters high, while perennials will vary in height but remain under one meter.
The irrigation system planned for the new green areas on the railway line covering will allow for automated and manual watering of the flowerbeds, in case of system malfunction or for supplementary watering during high temperatures.
These works are financed by Next Generation EU funds through the Spanish Government's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. The initiative stems from an agreement between the Department of Sustainable Mobility and the Eibar City Council, serving as a clear example of railway urban integration.
This marks the third project of similar characteristics undertaken in the locality. In early 2011, the covering of the Ardantza station and part of the route was inaugurated (approximately 200 meters long and 2,258 m²). Four years later, the Amaña-Ardanza section opened, measuring 650 meters in length and covering 8,500 m².
