Eibar has seen a favorable trend in its citizen security indicators during the first eight months of 2026, according to provisional data from the Ertzaintza (Basque Police). Significant decreases have been recorded across various crime types compared to the same period last year, attributed to the coordination between the Municipal Police and the Ertzaintza, pressure on habitual offenders, and enhanced prevention strategies.
Key figures include a reduction in home burglaries (from 33 to 22 cases), business robberies (from five to two), and thefts in enclosed spaces (from 73 to 25). Crimes against sexual freedom also saw a decline, from ten cases in 2025 to four in the same period of 2026.
The mayor of Eibar, Jon Iraola, positively assessed the data but stressed the importance of maintaining prudence and continuing efforts. "The data indicates we are moving in the right direction, but security allows no complacency. We must continue working daily, strengthening prevention, maintaining police presence, and improving inter-agency coordination," he stated.
Iraola highlighted the collaboration between the Municipal Police and the Ertzaintza as a crucial factor in enhancing safety. Additionally, the upcoming installation of new traffic and security cameras was announced to bolster prevention and aid in crime resolution.
The neighborhood police initiative, launched in April, aims to bring the Municipal Police closer to residents and address their concerns. The mayor emphasized a comprehensive approach to security, combining police action, prevention, and community proximity.
