Five Navarrese Police Officers Die in Serious Accident on AP-8 in Elgoibar

Five officers from the Navarrese Foral Police have died in a serious accident on the AP-8 highway near Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa), when the van they were in collided with a tanker truck.

Five officers from the Navarrese Foral Police have died in a serious accident on the AP-8 highway near Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa), when the van they were in collided with a tanker truck. The deceased were en route to a meeting at the police center in Iurreta, to which they had been invited by the Ertzaintza, according to the Basque Department of Security.
The Department of Security has expressed its affection and solidarity to the Navarrese Foral Police and the families of the deceased. The incident occurred around 9:15 AM this Wednesday due to reasons that are still unknown. Medical services confirmed the deaths of the five occupants of the van as a result of their injuries. The truck driver was taken to a hospital.
This incident marks the most serious traffic accident recorded in Euskadi this century. The road is closed in both directions following the collision, which occurred around 9:00 AM.
According to Bidegi, the accident between the truck and the van took place on the AP-8, in Elgoibar, at kilometer marker 69, heading towards Bilbao, at the junction with the AP-1 in Maltzaga. Traffic is being diverted via the AP-1. The Ertzaintza has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the fatal accident.
At approximately 10:40 AM this Wednesday, one lane was opened on the AP-8 towards Behobia, and alternative passage is being provided to vehicles coming from the AP-1 and AP-8. The junction with the AP-1 has been opened for the Bilbao direction, but the AP-8 remains closed from the Maltzaga junction onwards.
Traffic congestion is building up in the direction of Bilbao from Mendaro, and in the direction of Behobia from Ipurua (Eibar), on the AP-1 towards Eibar-AP-8 from Soraluze.
