This astronomical phenomenon, where the Sun, Moon, and Earth will align, will cause the Moon to completely cover the sun, creating an darkness similar to night for a moment. The region will offer a unique opportunity to witness this event that will not be repeated for hundreds of years.
The eclipse will begin on August 12, around 7:30 PM, initially as a partial eclipse. The moon will gradually cover the sun, and the process will peak at 8:27 PM. At that moment, for 60 seconds, the moon will completely obscure the sun, causing a noticeable drop in temperature and gusts of wind. Afterward, the sun will begin to reappear.
To observe the phenomenon properly, it is recommended to find a location with a clear northwestern horizon, as the sun will be quite low. Furthermore, taking safety measures is essential; eclipse glasses must be used to avoid looking directly at the sun. Various opticians and organizations have already started distributing them.
Authorities expect a large crowd in the viewing areas and have therefore called for limited travel and proactive planning.
In Amurrio, the eclipse will coincide with the chupinazo (opening firework). In a festive atmosphere, the Zaprast elektrotxaranga will lead a parade to the optimal viewing point for the eclipse. Additionally, the Amurrio City Council will distribute glasses to safely watch the eclipse that same afternoon.
