The City Council anticipates that the demolition work will extend for two weeks, for which Kale Zaharra has been closed, with temporary access points arranged for vehicles. The building had structural problems and had been vacant since 2021, after ceasing its activities in the midst of the pandemic.
Young people occupied the space in the spring of 2012, the day after Urduña's 14th Youth Day, and immediately began to prepare it. They organized various areas, beyond the concert hall and bar, such as a bouldering wall, meeting rooms, and a rehearsal space.
Due to the building's location, archaeological excavations had to be carried out amidst the community work, as it was in a historic area and one of its walls was part of the city's medieval wall. Researchers discovered a drainage system from the 17th or 18th century, yielding interesting results.
The Gaztetxe hosted numerous activities throughout the decade, including crowded concerts, such as the one offered by the group Itxaropen Zikina in 2014 and Eskupitajo in 2018. However, in 2021, it was announced that its use would cease due to structural problems.
