Bermeoko Ziklistek is made up of a group of 25 to 30 friends who share a passion for cycling. During the pandemic, they decided to dedicate part of their contributions to donating to various causes. Now, under the motto 'For Life', and in collaboration with Peña Ciclista 'El Patorrillo' from Castejón, they have proposed a solidarity challenge to raise funds and give visibility to the fight against cancer.
This initiative, supported by the Spanish Association Against Cancer, will take place during the weekend of May 9th and 10th. The challenge consists of completing a round trip route between the Bizkaian coast and inland Navarra, covering a total distance of 450 kilometers. Cyclists estimate spending more than 20 hours pedaling to unite both communities in a journey full of symbolism.
According to the organizers, the outward journey represents the moment of diagnosis and the uncertainty that comes with moving away from normality, while the return to Bermeo symbolizes the constant struggle and the hope of continuing to live alongside loved ones.
Bermeoko Ziklistek is no stranger to such feats, having previously carried out other altruistic challenges to support various diseases. Regular collaborators of the Bermeo association 'Eutsi gogor', which supports families with children suffering from rare diseases, they also pedaled in 2022 to support research into diseases like ALS, together with the 'Dale Candela' association, managing to raise over 20,000 euros.
In this new challenge, the goal is "never to forget people suffering from cancer and to raise funds in their support", focusing on the physical and mental strength of those who face the disease daily. To finance the cause, the organization has put a commemorative challenge jersey on sale for 100 euros, with all proceeds going entirely to the Spanish Association Against Cancer. They have also enabled a QR code and an online platform to receive donations from committed individuals and companies. The organizers aim to raise 45,000 euros.
The expedition will pass through various points such as Bilbao, Estella, and Marcilla, and the return to Bermeo on May 10th will be filled with activities, including performances by local groups such as Dantzaz Blai, Kanta Kanta Lorue, Bermeoko Abesbatza, and Kirik, as well as concerts by the bands Apokhalipsis, Addar, and Tximino.
“"No one should pedal alone, neither in this fight nor in any other."
