The event, organized by entities such as the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) with support from the Basque Government, brought together institutional representatives, experts, and key stakeholders from the sector. The gathering combined gastronomy, culture, and responsible management, fostering discussion crucial for the future of tuna activity in Europe.
The event, titled 'from ocean to table', was supported by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Bermeo City Council. It highlighted the connection between the product, the territory, and good fishing practices, from capture to the final consumer, through each culinary preparation presented.
“"Sustainability is not built solely through rules, but through shared knowledge, collective commitment, and a long-term vision."
Leizaola stated that initiatives like this allow for the presentation in Europe of a model that connects the entire value chain, from ocean to table, demonstrating that it is possible to generate global impact from territories with a strong local identity. The conference also served as a platform to introduce the International Declaration for Tuna Sustainability to key European actors, an initiative promoted by the organization itself to strengthen the sector's global commitment to responsible and transparent practices.
“"We have tried to highlight what is behind a can of tuna or bonito del norte: people, community, and companies that generate value and development."
Leizaola emphasized that, for this, it is essential to care for the resource, human rights, and the competitiveness of those who act responsibly.
