Durango is once again hosting the XXII Euskal Jaiak Cesta Punta Championship, as part of the Euskal Jaiak activity program and organized by the local DUJA school. The competition will gather 72 high-level pelota players from 18 associations, solidifying its position as one of the most prominent amateur Basque pelota events.
The tournament will be played in an elimination format and will include two preliminary phases, featuring young players between 16 and 20 years old, who will compete for the two spots that grant access to the final phase. This final stage will begin in the quarterfinals, where six top-level pairs are already waiting.
The elimination rounds will start this Saturday and will unfold over 16 match days, with games every weekend at the Ezkurdi Jai Alai fronton. Matches will take place on Saturdays at 5:30 PM and Sundays at 10:30 AM, leading up to the grand final scheduled for June 6. The championship will offer prizes of 1,500 euros and will be accompanied by musical entertainment, contributing to a festive and competitive atmosphere.
The quality of the participants and the tradition of the event predict a great reception from the public.
Furthermore, the final day on June 6 will be complemented by a Basque pelota marathon in other modalities, including Joko Garbi, considered a precursor to cesta punta. This special match aims to recover the historical essence of the discipline in a fronton with great tradition like Ezkurdi Jai Alai.
