The Spanish Government has refrained from taking a clear stance on the potential temporary transfer of Pablo Picasso's Guernica from Madrid's Reina Sofía Museum to Euskadi, citing technical considerations.

Before the PNV poses its question to the Minister of Culture in the Senate, the socialist wing of the Spanish Government has avoided giving a categorical answer regarding the hypothetical temporary transfer of Pablo Picasso's Guernica from the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid to the Guggenheim Museum. The spokesperson for Pedro Sánchez's executive, the Navarrese socialist Elma Saiz, stated that matters concerning “works of art” are subject to “professional technical criteria,” which the government “will respect.” She added that the Ministry of Culture (managed by Sumar) is currently analyzing these criteria.
Saiz did attempt to distance herself from Madrid's president, the conservative Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who has taken the request from Lehendakari Pradales and the PNV as an outrage. Ayuso called the PNV “uncultured,” and Saiz affirmed that the Spanish Government's response “will never resort to Ayuso's disparagements.” The spokesperson criticized Ayuso for “insulting and disrespecting a part of the population every time she makes a statement.” However, Saiz did not explicitly confirm whether the government's position aligns with that of the Reina Sofía Museum, which “strongly advises against” the transfer, arguing that vibrations during transit could lift paint layers or cause tears.

"What I do wonder is why Ms. Ayuso, every time she makes a statement, has to insult and disrespect a part of the population. Citizens would appreciate it if she did not use disparagement every time she intervenes."

Meanwhile, the Basque Government continues to await a formal response to its request. Vice-Lehendakari Ibone Bengoetxea has reiterated that they are not asking for clarification on the painting's current condition, but rather for guidance on “what the optimal conditions would be” for its temporary transfer, for nine months, from October to the end of June 2027, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Aguirre Government and the bombing of Gernika. Lakua proposes an analysis of technological advancements, the physical conditions of the space, and collaboration between the two museums to ensure the transfer is carried out with the best possible guarantees.
