Renfe, the railway entity under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has concluded a 2.4 million euro investment to renovate the Sagrada Familia Commuter Rail station in Ortuella. The works, which began in 2024, have significantly modernized the facilities, improving accessibility and functionality in the heart of the municipality.
The project involved the construction of a new station building and the installation of two platform shelters to protect passengers from adverse weather. To enhance accessibility, a new elevator with three stops (platform, sidewalk, and footbridge) and appropriate paving has been installed. Additionally, the platform has been extended from 47 meters to 105 meters and its height raised to 1.05 meters, increasing passenger comfort and functionality.
“"With this large-scale action, a station that was completely obsolete has been left as new and with universal accessibility."
Improvements also covered the lighting, paving, railings, and security fencing of the footbridge connecting to the La Ralera and Golifar neighborhoods. According to Renfe, these works not only benefit the accessibility of the railway premises but are also advantageous for the general population of Ortuella, as the footbridge is now accessible to people with reduced mobility, even if they do not use railway services.
Full accessibility at this point in Ortuella had been a long-standing demand from the municipality, with the start of works delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mayor Saulo Nebreda celebrated that the previously obsolete station is now completely new and universally accessible. Moving forward, the City Council will manage and maintain the infrastructure, as the elevator is for mixed use (municipal and railway). All improvements comply with the accessibility regulations of Adif, Renfe, and the Accessibility in Transport Law of the Basque Autonomous Community. The Sagrada Familia station, part of the C2 Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto-Muskiz Commuter Rail line, serves over 1,000 daily passengers and operates 89 trains on weekdays, with a journey time of approximately twenty-six minutes to Abando Indalecio Prieto.
