The new service for collecting furniture and bulky items in Portugalete has commenced, bringing significant improvements over the previous contract. With an investment exceeding 535,000 euros and a two-year duration, the City Council has stipulated that, starting this month, furniture collection will be carried out directly from homes, eliminating the need for residents to handle or dismantle items.
In addition to furniture, the company Emaús will also accept televisions, screens, radios, speakers, cameras, computers, printers, heaters, vacuum cleaners, kitchen robots, and other appliances. The contract also includes the collection of furniture and bulky items abandoned indiscriminately on public roads. All collected items will be transported to specialized centers for recycling and subsequent reuse.
The new service also extends collection hours, which will now take place from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 20:00, excluding weekends and holidays. To request this service, citizens should call 94 416 74 00 or send an email to emausportugalete@gmail.com.
In 2024, Portugalete recorded a volume of 447,380 kilograms of bulky waste. Meanwhile, Barakaldo, which also evaluated its service, registered 784 tons in the same year, experiencing a 14% increase last year with 896 tons of furniture and belongings collected. The Barakaldo City Council reminds residents that they can contact 944 370 838 free of charge or request an appointment via the BarakaldoGarbi website. Abandoning items on public roads can result in fines ranging from 750 to 1,200 euros.
