The PNV will ask Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun in the Senate this Tuesday why he refuses to study the necessary conditions for the temporary transfer of Guernica to Euskadi, as proposed by the Basque Government.

According to the Jeltzale party, Senator Igotz López will bring the request for the temporary transfer of Guernica to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to the Senate's control plenary session. The proposed period for the transfer is between October 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027.
This initiative coincides with the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the First Basque Government and the bombing of Gernika. The Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, and the Vice-Lehendakari, Ibone Bengoetxea, have already conveyed this request to both the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and Minister Ernest Urtasun.
Specifically, the PNV will question Urtasun on "why the Ministry refuses to study the necessary conditions to materialize the temporary loan" of the iconic painting.
For its part, the Basque Government is urging the Ministry to prepare "a possibilistic, exceptional, and high-level report" that analyzes whether "conditions, technical means, and guarantees" exist for "a temporary and extraordinary transfer, based on a shared political will."
