Orduña leads the ranking of land dedicated to organic production in Bizkaia, according to data collected by Ekolurra, the Council of Organic Agriculture and Food of Euskadi. The municipality has 246 certified hectares, which accounts for 16% of its usable agricultural land. Including 900 hectares of public utility mountain land, 33% of the municipal area holds organic certification.
“"Orduña has not come to lead organic production in Bizkaia by chance. Behind the cold, but outstanding data, there is a sustained municipal commitment over time, a network of committed producers, and a citizenry that increasingly chooses what it eats better."
The Orduña City Council, through its agroecological development service Ekoizpen, aims to build a local food system based on food sovereignty. In 2023, the Network of Municipalities for Agroecology awarded Orduña the Cities and Towns that Feed Award for its agroecological transition project, positioning the locality as a pioneering example at the state level. Furthermore, the municipality hosted the Annual Meeting of this network last November.
One of the most visible expressions of the municipality's ecological commitment is the Ecological Fair, which originated over a decade ago from the merger of two historic livestock events in Orduña. This event has become the main annual showcase for local consumption in the region and a cornerstone of the municipal policy for healthy and sustainable food. This year's edition will take place on April 25, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, in Foru Plaza.
The fair will feature twenty stalls from local zero-kilometer producers, coming from Ayala, Azpeitia, Galdakao, Gamiz-Fika, Inoso, Larrazubi, Valpuesta, Zaballa, and Orduña itself. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase products such as bread, oil, vegetables, cheese, honey, Basque cake, jams, juices, wine, beer, flowers, and black garlic. The event is supported by BBK and the Gorbeialde association.
Additionally, the Santa Cecilia Band will offer a kalejira (parade) starting at 12:00 PM, followed by a concert in Foru Plaza. The organic nursery Biolandare, from Gamiz-Fika, will have a horticulture consultation stand with an agricultural technical engineering specialist. At 2:30 PM, two baskets with products from the fair will be raffled among those who have made a purchase.
