In Urduliz, the new Orbizta association has emerged with the goal of strengthening the local Basque-speaking community and increasing the presence of the Basque language in public spaces, following its official presentation on March 13.

The former Urdulizko Euskara Taldea, established in the 1990s and championed by members such as Iñaki Igartua and Karmen Azurmendi, has been relaunched under the name Orbizta. A group of former members and local residents decided to revive the project, adapting it to current realities.
The new name, Orbizta, signifies "to revive Basque, to re-energize it," a term commonly used in Urduliz and its surroundings. The association's primary goal is to create meeting points and build a network among the town's Basque speakers, as despite over half the population being Basque speakers, the language has a limited presence in public.
Several activities have already been initiated, including Berbalagun groups, which have helped foster community, and a reading club. Additionally, they organize Berbatxangoak and offer courses on morphology and home Basque with Iñaki Igartua.
Looking ahead, they plan to organize leisure activities for young people. To this end, they have participated in reflection sessions organized by the Topagunea movement to diagnose the state of Basque in the locality and define future projects.
The association's official presentation took place on March 13 at the Urduliz cultural center hall and was a resounding success. The event blended past and future, bringing together former members of the Basque group and Basque-speaking "immigrants" from outside the area. It also featured theater, music, bertsolaris, and videos, with participation from local residents and choirs, and the feedback received was very positive.
Updates on Orbizta's initiatives can be followed on their website and social media. The steering committee is enthusiastic and will gradually introduce new projects, encouraging public participation.
